Omega-3 essential fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fats. These are one of four basic types of fat that the body derives from food. (Cholesterol, saturated fat and monounsaturated fat are the others). Consumption of high amounts of food rich in saturated fats has been associated with degenerative diseases such as heart disease and even cancer. However, consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3s is actually good for you. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are reported to be beneficial in controlling many metabolic disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, psychological disorders, inflammatory conditions (including arthritis), skin disorders and non-insulin-dependent (or type II) diabetes.
Omega-3s are considered "essential" fatty acids because they are essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body. They must be obtained through the diet or supplementation. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are two important omega-3 fatty acids. Both EPA and DHA are found primarily in cold-water fish.

Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 polyunsaturated essential fatty acid (EFA) found primarily in certain plant oils, including evening primrose oil, borage oil and black currant oil. Essential fatty acids are required for human health but cannot be synthesized by the body. They must be obtained through dietary sources or through supplementation. GLA is converted in the body to dihomo-y-linolenic acid (DGLA), which is a precursor to certain eicosanoids. Eicosanoids, including prostaglandins, prostacydins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes, are hormone-like compounds involved in inflammation, immunity and other body functions. In general, GLA promotes the formation of beneficial eicosanoids that decrease inflammation and modulate immune function. Inflammation plays a major role in many prevalent diseases. Decreasing inflammation may have a beneficial effect on these conditions.
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a 22-carbon-chain, omega-3 essential fatty acid with six double bonds. These six double bonds make it a polyunsaturated fatty acid. It is similar to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in its structure and can be converted from EPA in the body. DHA occurs naturally in the human body and is found in rich amounts in brain tissues. However, it is an essential fatty acid because it cannot be synthesized in the body and must come from dietary sources. The richest source of DHA and EPA is fish oil.

Following a recent inspection of NSP's raw and finished aloe products, the IASC awarded those products the council's seal of approval, certifying the finest quality and purity.
We used High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to measure the amount of melatonin in randomly selected samples of popular brands of melatonin products. We then compared the actual amount of melatonin found in each sample to the amount listed on the corresponding product labels. As you can see, most of the products tested fell short of their label claims, some substantially. One sample exceeded its label claim by 57 percent, which may be more melatonin than some customers want. We tested an NSP product against three random samples of popular, over-the-counter antacid products to see how much acid each would neutralize. Since high levels of stomach acid can lead to many forms of discomfort (heartburn, indigestion, etc.), the product that neutralizes the most acid in a given time period should provide superior relief. Using pre-established scientific testing methods, we placed a sample equivalent to one tablet of each product into separate beakers containing 70 ml of water plus 30 ml of hydrochloric acid (the same acid found in the stomach) and stirred for 15 minutes. Then we measured the amount of acid remaining in each beaker. Deducting this from the original 30 ml of acid, we calculated how much acid was neutralized.
